EcoFlow STREAM 5000 Review: What It Is, and Which UK Route It Can Actually Use

The EcoFlow STREAM 5000 is a 5,024 Wh home battery system with up to 5,000 W of solar input and 3,000 W of AC output. Because it contains a battery, it cannot use the UK plug-in solar route that opens on 27 August 2026. It needs a conventional installation instead.

The EcoFlow STREAM 5000 is a 5,024 Wh home battery system with up to 5,000 W of solar input and 3,000 W of AC output. Because it contains a battery, it cannot use the UK plug-in solar route that opens on 27 August 2026. It needs a conventional installation instead.

Can the STREAM 5000 use the plug-in route?

No — and on two separate grounds. The Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification v2 does not permit battery storage within the device, and the STREAM 5000 is built around a 5,024 Wh battery. It also produces up to 3,000 W AC, where the plug-in route caps output at 800 VA and 3.5 A. That does not make it illegal, and it does not make it useless. It can be installed conventionally, by an electrician, under the same rules as any other home battery. What it cannot do is be plugged into a 13 A socket under SI 2026 No. 848 from 27 August 2026. Note the distinction, because it matters: it is this battery-integrated model that is excluded, not EcoFlow as a brand. What the STREAM 5000 Actually Is

Strip away the launch language and this is a floor-standing home battery with solar inputs built in. EcoFlow opened its pre-launch period on 15 June 2026, and its own UK product page puts the capacity at 5,024 Wh, the maximum solar input at 5,000 W and the maximum AC output at 3,000 W. It takes up to 12 solar panels. Stack expansion units alongside it and EcoFlow says the system reaches 90 kWh of storage, 18,000 W of output power and 30,000 W of solar input — home solar at a scale that has nothing to do with a balcony.

That is a different category of product from the thing most people mean by balcony solar.

A plug-in kit is two panels and a small inverter that pushes a few hundred watts into a socket. This is a whole-home energy system that happens to share a product name with EcoFlow’s balcony range. If you arrived here after reading about 800 W kits, the STREAM 5000 is not the next size up. It is a different decision, with an electrician attached to it.

Verified Specifications — and the Ones EcoFlow Has Not Published

The site’s rule is that a specification comes from the manufacturer’s own documentation or it does not go on the page. Applied to the STREAM 5000, that leaves a shorter table than you will see elsewhere.

EcoFlow also estimates roughly 5,600 kWh of annual generation, “covering the electricity consumption of a typical family of four”. That is their figure for a fully expanded system, not a UK measurement of the base unit, and we would not plan around it.

On price and timing: EcoFlow publishes £1,599.00 on its UK page, down from £1,899.00, with Klarna instalments and two larger bundles. The launch line is “Expected to launch in September 2026”. Variants currently show as notify-me rather than buy-now, so you can read the price but not yet place an order.

Everything below is absent from EcoFlow’s own UK page. Some of it is circulating in trade coverage. None of it is primary, so none of it appears here as fact.

What EcoFlow does publish, it publishes clearly: the price, the bundles and the launch month are all on the UK page. What it does not publish is most of the engineering.

Why the Battery Is the Problem Under SI 2026 No. 848

From 27 August 2026, SI 2026 No. 848 makes it lawful in Great Britain to sell and use a plug-in solar device that meets the Interim Product Specification. The specification is narrow on purpose. Output is capped at 800 VA and 3.5 A, single phase. Panel capacity is capped at 2,000 W DC. The plug has to be a factory-fitted BS 1363 type with a 5 A fuse. And battery storage within the device is not permitted at all.

The STREAM 5000 fails that last test by design, and it exceeds the output cap by a factor of nearly four.

This is where a lot of coverage goes wrong, so it is worth being precise. Being outside the plug-in route is not a safety finding and it is not a ban. It is a statement about which legal pathway a product has to take. A 5 kWh battery has always needed a conventional installation in the UK, and it still does. Nothing about SI 2026 No. 848 changed that either way.

The brand-level point is equally worth getting right. EcoFlow is not excluded from the plug-in route. A panels-plus-microinverter configuration with no storage in it could in principle be certified. None is listed under the ENA Type Test Register’s Plug-in Solar type — EcoFlow’s many register entries are three-phase energy storage inverters, which is a different thing entirely. What Installing One Conventionally Involves

Three things, none of them optional.

An electrician. This is fixed electrical work in a dwelling, so it sits under Part P of the Building Regulations and has to be carried out to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026. That is not a plug-in job and it is not a job to attempt yourself.

A DNO notification. Any grid-connected generation has to be notified to your distribution network operator. Engineering Recommendation G98 covers single-phase installations up to 16 A per phase, which is about 3.68 kW — so at 3,000 W the base unit sits insideG98, and takes the G98 route. Stack expansion units toward the quoted 18,000 W and you leave G98 for a G99 application, which is a longer process with the DNO’s assessment attached. Somewhere to put it. EcoFlow describes a compact footprint, but it does not publish dimensions on the UK page, so plan the space with the installer rather than from a marketing line.

STREAM 5000 vs the First-Generation STREAM Range

The naming is genuinely confusing, and EcoFlow has not made it easier.

The first-generation STREAM range is a balcony product line. The STREAM Microinverter is the plug-in unit at the bottom of it. The STREAM Ultra adds a 1.92 kWh battery across four MPPT channels, the STREAM Pro and STREAM Max sit alongside it at the same capacity with fewer channels, and the STREAM Ultra X carries 3.84 kWh. The new STREAM 5000 is the second generation and a different scale entirely — and it stacks, with an expansion battery 5000 unit alongside it rather than a bigger box.

If you already own EcoFlow portable power stations, an EcoFlow Delta or River, the STREAM 5000 does not replace them. It is a separate, fixed system.

You will also see the name STREAM AC 5000. EcoFlow treats it as a separate product in its own promotional terms, which refer to ordering “the STREAM AC 5000 or STREAM 5000” — but it publishes no product page or SKU for it, and the obvious URLs return 404. So EcoFlow names two products and documents one.

On route status, the position across the range is simple. Every model with a battery in it — Ultra, Ultra X, Pro, Max, AC Pro, and the STREAM 5000 — is outside the plug-in route. The STREAM Microinverter is the only one in the family with the right electrical shape for it, and even that has no listing under the register’s Plug-in Solar type.

The App, the Smart Meter and Tariff Control

The OASIS 3.0 energy management layer and Smart Tariff Management are the parts EcoFlow leads with, and for a UK buyer they are the parts that actually determine whether a system like this earns its keep.

The logic is straightforward. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, the system charges from the grid when the unit rate is low, holds it, and discharges into the house when the rate is high. Solar generation gets used first, so self-consumption stays high and surplus solar energy goes into storage rather than out to the grid for nothing. The EcoFlow Smart Meter Dual CT is what gives the system a live view of what the house is drawing, and without a smart meter reading the incoming supply, an energy management system is guessing. Solar utilisation is the number worth watching in the EcoFlow app, not peak output power.

Local mode matters too, and it is a fair question to ask EcoFlow directly before buying: how much of this continues to work if the cloud service does not.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Wait

It suits you if you own your home, have somewhere to install a floor-standing battery, are on a time-of-use tariff, and want storage sized for a whole house rather than a balcony. On those terms it is a reasonable-looking product and the expansion path is genuinely useful.

Wait if you are renting, or if you are in a flat and were looking at balcony solar because rooftop is not available to you. This is not that product. It cannot be taken with you when you move, and it needs consent and an electrician.

And wait if the reason you are here is the 27 August 2026 date. Nothing about that date makes the STREAM 5000 easier to install, cheaper, or newly permitted. It was installable before and it is installable after, on exactly the same terms.

At £1,599 with a September launch, the price and timing are now the parts you can plan around. What you still cannot check is the engineering — no published chemistry, cycle life, IP rating, dimensions or warranty term. For a fixed installation that will outlive several phones, that is a thin basis on which to commit, and worth asking EcoFlow directly before you order.
