How Long Do Balcony Solar Panels Last?

Panels are warranted for output to 25 or 30 years; the microinverter for 10 to 12. What Anker, EcoFlow and APsystems publish, and what wears out first.

A balcony solar panel should still be producing most of its rated output after 25 years, because that is what the manufacturers warrant. The microinverter has the shorter clock: published product warranties for the units sold with plug-in kits run to 10 or 12 years, not 25.

That gap is the whole answer, and most guides to how long do solar panels last skip it because they are written about a roof. Install solar panels up there and you get one solar panel system, fitted by a trade and warranted through it. A plug-in kit is four components in a box, each with its own warranty and its own end date.

How long do solar panels last in the UK?

Two figures matter, and they get reported as one.

The first is how long the glass and silicon keep working. Solar panels are made with no moving parts, which is why a modern module is built to last 25 years or more, why the published solar panel lifespan runs that long, and why solar panel manufacturers will put it in writing. Heat makes solar panels degrade faster, and there is less of it here than in southern Europe, so solar panels in the UK are rarely limited by climate.

The second is how long the electronics keep working. Every plug-in kit has a microinverter turning DC into mains AC, every daylight hour, in a sealed box outdoors, and how plug-in solar panels work covers the mechanics. What matters here is that the manufacturers put a shorter number on it themselves.

So the honest answer for a balcony kit: the panels will probably outlive the inverter, the brackets and the cables. Budget accordingly.

Product warranty and performance warranty are different things

This is where the confusion starts. The two documents cover different risks.

A product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. If a panel delaminates or the inverter stops converting, this is what you claim under. Anker’s own wording draws the boundary: its limited product warranty "does not guarantee any particular power output of the products, which is covered exclusively by the limited performance warranty described below".

A performance warranty covers output. It guarantees that after a stated number of years the panel still produces at least a stated percentage of its nameplate rating. It does nothing if the panels are damaged, and it won’t replace a dead inverter.

So one kit carries at least two clocks, and the long headline figure is almost always the performance one.

"30-year warranty" usually means output, not the product

When a balcony kit is advertised with a 25 or 30 year warranty, check which instrument that figure comes from. On Anker’s own European product page the phrase is "Performance Guaranteed Up to 30 Years", while its service documentation puts the matching product warranty on that panel at 15 years. Both numbers are real, and they cover different things.

What the balcony brands actually publish

Every figure below comes from the manufacturer’s own published documentation, checked on 17 August 2026. Where a brand publishes nothing, it is recorded as unknown rather than filled in from a retailer listing.

Anker’s figures come from its German-language service site, covering the RS40 and RS40P kits sold in Germany. Its UK site carries no English equivalent, and the MI80 microinverter on the current European balcony page isn’t listed. One condition is worth reading twice: the German text conditions the 12-year RS40 product warranty on the panels being sold in listed regions and "installed on the roofs of residential buildings". That reads as rooftop boilerplate carried over, and we’re not going to claim it voids a balcony installation, because Anker hasn’t said so. Ask the seller.

EcoFlow’s warranty page lists product terms only. The policy served on its UK site is a table of periods by product, with no output guarantee, no degradation figure and no percentage anywhere in it. It covers purchases made on eu.ecoflow.com, so check which entity you are contracting with. The STREAM range also integrates battery storage, which the plug-in route excludes, so those units aren’t plug-in devices in UK terms whatever the warranty says.

APsystems ties the warranty to app registration. The EZ1 limited warranty for Europe gives twelve years, but only for units registered on the AP EasyPower app. Unregistered units get "a Legal Warranty of 2 years, starting from the shipment date". The clock starts at the earliest of three months after shipment, the registration date, or the first Bluetooth connection. It transfers to a later owner on a form and a fee, which matters if you sell the flat with the kit still fitted.

Hoymiles is the gap. Its own site describes "a maximum warranty of up to 25 years" in an editorial article, and it runs a warranty extension service, but we found no published standard term for the EU or UK market, and its EU datasheet for the HMS-600 to HMS-1000W-2T series has no warranty row. `` For which unit to pair with what, see our comparison of the main microinverter brands.

How fast do solar panels degrade?

The published performance warranties are the only contractual numbers available, so work from those.

Anker’s RS40 guarantees not less than 90% of rated output during the first 12 years and above 80% at 25 years: a warranted loss of 20 percentage points across a lifespan of 25 years, or roughly 0.8 points a year. The RS40P guarantees not less than 93.4% at 15 years and above 88.8% at 30 years, nearer 0.44 points a year over the first 15 and slower after.

Two cautions on reading those solar panel degradation figures.

The first is that they’re floors rather than forecasts. A warranty is the level below which the manufacturer owes you something, and panels commonly do better. We found no published UK field data on how plug-in kits degrade in service, which is unsurprising given they haven’t been legal to use here.

The second is that they’re checkpoints rather than a curve. Neither warranty publishes a first-year figure, so anyone telling you panels degrade at a rate of exactly so much a year is interpolating.

Panel type matters less than the marketing suggests. Many solar panels sold today are monocrystalline, including all the balcony kits above; polycrystalline solar panels have largely left new products rather than being shorter-lived. Microinverter lifespan and why it sets the shorter clock

On Anker’s kit the microinverter carries a shorter product warranty than either panel: 10 years against 12 and 15. That is the clearest published statement of the ranking, from the maker of both parts.

EcoFlow’s table is less tidy. Its microinverters get 10 years, longer than several of its own panels, so the "inverter always fails first" shorthand isn’t something the warranty schedules prove. What they do show is that no microinverter in these ranges is warranted for anything close to the 25 or 30 years a panel’s output is.

The engineering reason is straightforward. Panels are designed as glass, silicon and encapsulant with no active components, while a microinverter is switching semiconductors, capacitors and firmware in a sealed enclosure, running warm, outdoors, daily.

There’s a second dependency people miss. A plug-in device relies on its app and firmware, and IPS v2 requires the product to carry a mandatory DNO notification statement and a QR code pointing at registration guidance. A 10-year warranty on a unit whose vendor has stopped issuing firmware is worth less than the number suggests, so ask about support as well as length. Factors that influence solar panel lifespan on a balcony

Installing solar on a balcony puts a module in conditions a roof does not.

  • Mounting angle. Most balcony panels sit near-vertical against a railing, which sheds rain and snow and runs cooler than panels on your roof, though it also means less rain-washing.
  • Wind and fixings. A vertical panel on a railing is a sail. The panel is rarely what fails; brackets, bolts and cable ties are, and Anker and EcoFlow warrant brackets for one to two years against ten or more for the panel.
  • Shading and hot spots. Railings, downpipes and neighbouring blocks shade balcony panels far more than roofs, and persistent shade on the same cells is a thermal stress. That is why hot-spot endurance is a design-qualification test in IEC 61215.
  • Salt and pollution. Coastal and heavy-traffic sites corrode frames, fixings and connectors, the weakest links in most outdoor solar energy installations. Keep DC connectors mated, supported and out of standing water.
  • Seasonal load. Output collapses in a British December and recovers in spring. That’s normal, and balcony solar in winter sets out what to expect.

How to extend the lifespan of your solar panels

A few habits make a kit last longer, and most of it is twenty minutes twice a year.

  • Clean your solar panels safely. A near-vertical panel self-cleans reasonably well in UK rain. Where it does not, a soft brush and plain water from inside the balcony is enough. Don’t lean over a railing at height or use a pressure washer. Keeping panels clean protects the efficiency of your solar panels more reliably than anything else.
  • Deal with bird mess promptly. A dropping on one cell is shading that stays put.
  • Check the fixings each autumn, before storm season, and after any named storm.
  • Watch the app for a step change, not a slow drift. A sudden drop in one channel usually means a connector or shading.
  • Keep the inverter ventilated, and don’t box it in or mount it where it bakes behind glass.
  • Register the product, and keep the purchase date, serial numbers and DNO reference. With APsystems, registration is the difference between twelve years and two.

When to replace, and what UK law says about disposal

The signs panels need replacing are visible damage to glass or backsheet, moisture in the laminate, browning of the encapsulant, corrosion at the junction box, or output well below the warranted floor for their age. Panels degrade over time as a slow drift, and it takes real abuse for solar panels to degrade suddenly, so a step change is a fault rather than ageing.

Whether replacing your solar panels at ten years is worth it is arithmetic. At 90% of nameplate, replacement buys back a tenth of a small number, and the cost of solar hardware is better spent on the inverter.

Two UK-specific end-of-life points rooftop guides miss.

Panels are regulated electrical waste here. Schedule 3 of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013, as substituted from 1 January 2019, lists category 4 as "Consumer equipment and photovoltaic panels". A dead panel is WEEE, not general waste. Distributors must "offer free takeback on WEEE" and "accept WEEE for free from customers supplied with like-for-like products", in store, online or by mail order. The separate rule making large retailers take items without a purchase covers only WEEE under 25 cm on its longest side, which no balcony panel is.

Does 27 August 2026 change any of this?

Not the physics, and not the warranties. It changes what you may plug in.

From 27 August 2026 compliant plug-in solar devices can lawfully be sold and used in Great Britain, under SI 2026 No. 848. Compliance turns on the on-product IPS declaration and a verified ENA type test register listing, not on CE or UKCA marking. At the last check on 17 August 2026 four devices were listed under the "Plug-in Solar" device type and all four were assessed non-compliant, so nothing was verified. DNO notification stays mandatory, and G98 still limits a household to one device.

Buying for the warranty before a verified compliant device exists leaves you holding a long guarantee on something you can’t lawfully connect. The honest advice is to check register status first and warranty length second.

Warranty length is not a compliance test

A 25-year performance warranty tells you nothing about whether a kit is lawful to use in the UK. Those are separate questions with separate evidence. What actually changes on 27 August 2026 sets out the legal position, and our certification tracker records which kits have been verified.
